Here we share the cheap (or free!) resources we’ve used to compare fuel prices.

Fuelling our tow rig has been one of the biggest costs of our trip around Australia. So when it comes to choosing where we fuel up it pays to know how to find the best price.

Fuel Comparison Mobile Apps

We downloaded these mobile apps to help decide where to refuel.

MotorMouth
Search by regions on a map or use the advanced search to filter by post code, street name or suburb. The seven-day buying outlook has been helpful to pinpoint the best days of the week to buy fuel in major metro areas where prices cycle.

Petrol Spy
Compare prices and find petrol stations in regional areas. Petrol Spy includes site locations for the major and independent operators.

WikiCamps
This app has been our go-to source, not only to locate cheap campsites, but to find fuel prices in remote areas, including outback roadhouses. Information is generated by other travellers, and if you download the comments you can access information such as fuel prices without internet coverage. For less than ten dollars, this app has paid for itself with the money we’ve saved.

Fuel Comparison Websites

If we can’t find what we’re looking for on a mobile app, we check out one the following fuel comparison websites:

Fuel Watch WA
Information on current fuel prices around metro and country Western Australia.

Automobile Association of the Northern Territory
We found AANT most helpful to find the best prices in major areas such as Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin.

RACQ
Displays the fair fuel price you can expect to pay in regional areas of Queensland, as well as average regional fuel prices. Currently the site covers prices for unleaded petrol and diesel in 30 different regional areas across Queensland but unfortunately it doesn’t provide fuel station price data.

RAA
The listing of major service stations across metro and regional Australia has been handy when searching for a specific outlet to use shopper dockets.

Researching fuel prices and station locations to plan our pit stops has helped us save a lot of time and money when we fill up our tank.

Young Nomads Top Tip: Once you’ve located the cheapest fuel available in the area you’re traveling through, make sure you get the most mileage from your tank by checking out how we’ve improved our fuel economy on our big lap.
